The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks

3462

Synopsis: When confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman Taylor McAden feels compelled to take terrifying risks - risks no one else in the department would ever take - to save lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can't bring himself to make: He can't fall in love. For all his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who need to be rescued, women he leaves as soon as their crisis is over, as soon as the relationship starts to become truly intimate.

Then, one day, a raging, record-breaking storm hits his small Southern town. Denise Holton, a young single mother, is driving through it when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything. Unconscious and bleeding, she-but not Kyle-will be found by Taylor McAden. And when she wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone.

During the search for Kyle, the connection, the lifeline, between Taylor and Denise takes root. Taylor doesn't know that this rescue will be different from all the others, demanding far more than raw physical courage. That it will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived without love. That it will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain. That it will dare him to live life to the fullest by daring to love.

In The Rescue Nicholas Sparks weaves his inimitable spell, immersing us in the passions and the surprising complexities of modern relationships-and in doing so, teaching us something about our own.

I liked this novel as much as other Nicholas Sparks books that I have read. The way he writes characters it is like you can relate to them and visualize them as the story progresses. I like how this one seemed to span more time than other novels and you could see the growth of the characters and the relationship.

At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks

15924

Synopsis:  There are a few things Jeremy Marsh was sure he’d never do: he’d never leave New York City; never give his heart away after barely surviving one failed marriage; and never become a parent. Now Jeremy is living in the tiny town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, engaged to Lexie Darnell, the love of his life, and anticipating the start of their family. But just as his life seems to be settling into a blissful pattern, a mysterious and disturbing e-mail sets off a chain of events that will change the course of this young couple’s relationship. How well do we really know the ones we love? How do we handle the inevitable doubts, fears concerning parenthood, and stumbling blocks that are sometimes placed in our way? Continuing the story of the young couple introduced in Sparks’s bestselling True Believer, this novel captures all the heartbreak, tension, romance and surprises of those who are newly wed. An astonishing tale about the love between a man and a woman and between a parent and a child, At First Sight is about endings that bring new beginnings . . . tragedies that lead to unexpected joy . . . and, most of all, the magic of everlasting love.

I was excited to find out that this was a sequel to the "True Believer" book by Nicholas Sparks. Even though "True Believer" ended on a good note and I would have accepted it, I was happy to find out how their love story continued.  This book add a hint of mystery to it that makes you want to find out as well as see Jeremy & Lexi's love grow. While the ending had a true Nicholas Sparks ending, I thought it went well with the story and I could imagine the character so vividly in my head as I listened along to their story.  I would recommend this book, but you would have to read "True Believer" first to get the back story,

Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks

40669990. sy475

Synopsis: At 32, Russell Green has it all: a stunning wife, a lovable six year-old daughter, a successful career as an advertising executive and an expansive home in Charlotte. He is living the dream, and his marriage to the bewitching Vivian is the center of that. But underneath the shiny surface of this perfect existence, fault lines are beginning to appear...and no one is more surprised than Russ when he finds every aspect of the life he took for granted turned upside down. In a matter of months, Russ finds himself without a job or wife, caring for his young daughter while struggling to adapt to a new and baffling reality. Throwing himself into the wilderness of single parenting, Russ embarks on a journey at once terrifying and rewarding—one that will test his abilities and his emotional resources beyond anything he ever imagined.

I thought this book was very well written and even though it seemed like a longer novel it was good and I wanted to find out what happened. Even though I guessed what happened to his wife early on in the story, the way it progresses toward the end with the characters I didn't quite see coming. It made me think of my own two kids and how I want to cherish my moments with them through all of it; temper tantrums, to giggles of delight and pure happiness.  This is a book I would recommend.

Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks

38212843. sy475

Synopsis: Hope Anderson is at a crossroads. At thirty-six, she's been dating her boyfriend, an orthopedic surgeon, for six years. With no wedding plans in sight, and her father recently diagnosed with ALS, she decides to use a week at her family's cottage in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, to ready the house for sale and mull over some difficult decisions about her future.

Tru Walls has never visited North Carolina but is summoned to Sunset Beach by a letter from a man claiming to be his father. A safari guide, born and raised in Zimbabwe, Tru hopes to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his mother's early life and recapture memories lost with her death. When the two strangers cross paths, their connection is as electric as it is unfathomable . . . but in the immersive days that follow, their feelings for each other will give way to choices that pit family duty against personal happiness in devastating ways.

Illuminating life's heartbreaking regrets and enduring hope, Every Breath explores the many facets of love that lay claim to our deepest loyalties -- and asks the question, How long can a dream survive?

I loved how this book was inspired by a true story, which makes the story all the more endearing. I loved hearing about the characters  While I did find it a little ridiculous that two people could fall in love just over a weekend to each know they were meant for each other was a little far fetched, but the words of their romance and their conversations drew me in.  Plus I guess I could say, I'm a sap when it comes to romance stories.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

33574273. sx318

Synopsis: Out of this wild night, a strange visitor comes to the Murry house and beckons Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O'Keefe on a most dangerous and extraordinary adventure - one that will threaten their lives and our universe.

Winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, A Wrinkle in Time is the first book in Madeleine L'Engle's classic Time Quintet.

I had heard this book was a classic and I know it has been read by many, but I had never read it before. So when I found it via audiobook I thought it would be a quick and easy read.  The characters were well written and I found it a fascinating story. I think I was also prompted to read through it because there was a movie that was recently released (which I haven't seen yet). It will be interesting to contrast the book to the movie.  I also found out there are 4 more books in the series, so that will probably be on my list of books to read in the near future.

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

    22318578

Synopsis: Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?
Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo's clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).
With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house "spark joy" (and which don't), this international best seller featuring Tokyo's newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home - and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.
Since having kids I have felt like my life has been more cluttered than ever. As a child I would hold onto many things and so while my room felt organized, it was a mess in a way.  Now that I've read her book I want to be better and improve. I started already by going through some of my clothes and my kid's clothing and some of my bathroom toiletries.  Just with the time I spent cleaning I felt better. I would want to implement some of her techniques into my life and home, but not all of them.

The Year of Less: How I Stopped Shopping, Gave Away My Belongings, and Discovered Life Is Worth More Than Anything You Can Buy in a Store by Cait Flanders

    Synopsis: WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER

In her late twenties, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy—only keeping her from meeting her goals—she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year.

The Year of Less documents Cait’s life for twelve months during which she bought only consumables: groceries, toiletries, gas for her car. Along the way, she challenged herself to consume less of many other things besides shopping. She decluttered her apartment and got rid of 70 percent of her belongings; learned how to fix things rather than throw them away; researched the zero waste movement; and completed a television ban. At every stage, she learned that the less she consumed, the more fulfilled she felt.

The challenge became a lifeline when, in the course of the year, Cait found herself in situations that turned her life upside down. In the face of hardship, she realized why she had always turned to shopping, alcohol, and food—and what it had cost her. Unable to reach for any of her usual vices, she changed habits she’d spent years perfecting and discovered what truly mattered to her.

Blending Cait’s compelling story with inspiring insight and practical guidance, The Year of Less will leave you questioning what you’re holding on to in your own life—and, quite possibly, lead you to find your own path of less.

I loved how this book was read via audiobook by the author herself. It made the book better and I was able to relate more to her. It gave some good suggestions about what to do in one's life to get it under control and make this more manageable.   This is a quick read and a definite eye opener.
