Bookish and the Beast (Once Upon a Con #3) by Ashley Poston

In the third book in Ashley Poston's Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.

Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.

On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he's forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.

When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.

But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

I had read the other ones previously in this series and really enjoyed them.  I had this one on hold via audiobook since March but it would take a while to be ready.  So when I found out my library had physical copy of it I snatched it up.  This one didn't disappoint and how it referred to things in the beauty and the beast.  There was even a quote in this one that really spoke to me. It says, "But there is so much more in those words than just loving books.  I love the smell of them. I love the way their bindings look pressed together on a shelf.  I love the feel of pages buzzing through my fingers.  I love big books and small books. I love words and how they're strung together, and most of all, I love the stories.  I love how books are not really just books at all, but doorways.  They are portals into places I've never been and people I'll never be, and in then I have lived a thousand lives and seen a thousand different worlds. "  I would take that quote and frame it up next to all my books.   I loved this book and give it two thumbs up.

Daisies and Devotion (Mayfield Family #2) by Josi S. Kilpack

Timothy Mayfield is ready to marry for love, but, since his personal finances are thinner than he'd like, he knows he'll also need to find a wife with wealth. After receiving an unexpected inheritance, Timothy’s circumstances change, and he is free to pursue his “perfect woman” - one with blonde hair, blue eyes, a light laugh, arched eyebrows, elegant fingers, and a dazzling smile, among nearly twenty other characteristics.

Maryann Morrington doesn't match anything on Timothy's list - except for wealth. An heiress in her own right, she is tired of men pursuing her only for her money. But at nearly twenty-two years old, and not a particularly stunning beauty, she can’t be as picky as her friend Timothy is.

The two friends end up playing matchmaker for each other. Timothy will find a decent gentleman for Maryann, and Maryann will prove to Timothy that his “perfect woman” doesn’t exist.

Until Miss Shaw comes to London.

Now, with Timothy's heart captivated by the blonde, blue-eyed beauty, Maryann must decide if she should risk her heart and reveal her true feelings for her friend, or if she should settle for someone else. It's an up-and-down game of “he loves me, he loves me not” with both hearts and friendship on the line.

This is the 2nd novel of the Mayfield Family.  I felt like this one wasn't as exciting as the first novel and that he basically fell in love with his best friend, but it took him some time to see.  It was a cute story, but still prefer the first one.

Regina helps you break down tasks and build routines over time so that life becomes simple, not overwhelming. This book will help you:

Master time management
 Make your kitchen efficient
 Permanently organize closets and drawers
 Deal with your finances
Reclaim "dumping grounds" like the guest room, garage and basement
 Declutter the kids' rooms
Organize your travel plans—and the vacation photos and souvenirs
Entertain with joy

Regina reveals her magic formula for organizing anything, plus her method to stop the chronic cycles of clutter, misplaced items, and lateness. I thought this book would be helpful in getting my home organized and while I found a couple of helpful hints, this book was not that exciting or new. I found the book my Marie Kondo much more enlightening.  Many of the tips I had already been doing in my home or just seemed so outdated.

Promises and Primroses (Mayfield Family #1) by Josi S. Kilpack

Lord Elliott Mayfield aims to correct the very messy marital mistakes and spousal scandals of his brothers and sisters by requiring his nieces and nephews to choose worthy companions.  If they choose wisely, they will receive their generous share of the family’s inheritance.

Peter, Elliott’s eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth certainly has the credentials and the experience, but is altogether too young and pretty for such a job. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.

But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

This is a good, clean historical romance novel and an easy read.  The story was fast paced and the characters were well developed.   It was a quick read, and I plan to read the others in the series as well.

I'm In No Mood For Love (Writer Friends #2) by Rachel Gibson (Goodreads Author)

What is Clare Wingate doing? One minute she's suffering in a pretty-in-pink gown she'll never wear again, and the next thing she knows it's morning...and she has the nastiest hangover of her life.

To make matters worse, she's wearing nothing but a spritz of Escada and lying next to Sebastian Vaughan...her girlhood crush turned sexy, globe-hopping journalist. Somewhere between the toast and the toss of the bouquet she'd gotten herself into a whole lot of trouble.

Clare had the right to go wild - after all, she'd been knocked off her dyed-to-match shoes after finding her own fiance in a compromising position with the washing machine repairman. Clearly her society wedding is off.

But Sebastian pushed all the wrong buttons - and some of the right ones, too. Clare is in no mood for love - not even for lust - and wants to forget about Sebastian and his six-pack abs ASAP. But he isn't in the mood to go away, and his kiss is impossible to forget.

This book starts off from the previous book but focuses on another character.  This is also a steamy romance book and a book of starting over for Clare Wingate.  This is another fast paced book by Rachel Gibson, but I think I still liked the first one better just for the mystery aspect of it.

Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners by Therese Oneill

Have you ever wished you could live in an earlier, more romantic era?

Ladies, welcome to the 19th century, where there's arsenic in your face cream, a pot of cold pee sits under your bed, and all of your underwear is crotchless. (Why? Shush, dear. A lady doesn't question.)

UNMENTIONABLE is your hilarious, illustrated, scandalously honest (yet never crass) guide to the secrets of Victorian womanhood, giving you detailed advice on:

~ What to wear
~ Where to relieve yourself
~ How to conceal your loathsome addiction to menstruating
~ What to expect on your wedding night
~ How to be the perfect Victorian wife
~ Why masturbating will kill you
~ And more

Irresistibly charming, laugh-out-loud funny, and featuring nearly 200 images from Victorian publications, UNMENTIONABLE will inspire a whole new level of respect for Elizabeth Bennett, Scarlet O'Hara, Jane Eyre, and all of our great, great grandmothers.

(And it just might leave you feeling ecstatically grateful to live in an age of pants, super absorbency tampons, epidurals, anti-depressants, and not-dying-of-the-syphilis-your-husband-brought-home.)

This book was not as funny as the description said. It was the cover that caught my attention and then the description.  I had thought about what it would be like to live back during that time, but seeing all the ladies and the layers they wore it made it a little less desirable.  I am a woman who likes her blue jeans.  It is a book that makes you think and imagine what it would have been like.  I did listen to the audiobook, so I was not able to see the images that are in the novel.  If I ever come across a physical copy of this book I would be interested to see what the pictures were. I would give this 3 stars.

The Desolations of Devil's Acre (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children #6) by Ransom Riggs

The fate of peculiardom hangs in the balance in this epic conclusion to the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

The last thing Jacob Portman saw before the world went dark was a terrible, familiar face.

Suddenly, he and Noor are back in the place where everything began - his grandfather's house. Jacob doesn't know how they escaped from V's loop to find themselves in Florida. But he does know one thing for certain: Caul has returned.

After a narrow getaway from a blood-thirsty hollow, Jacob and Noor reunite with Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children in Devil's Acre. The Acre is being plagued by desolations - weather fronts of ash and blood and bone - a terrible portent of Caul's amassing army.

Risen from the Library of Souls and more powerful than ever, Caul and his apocalyptic agenda seem unstoppable. Only one hope remains - deliver Noor to the meeting place of the seven prophesied ones. If they can decipher its secret location.

This book is the final book in the Peculiar Children series.  When I found out about this book I immediately put a hold on it from my local library.  As I started to read it, it took me a little bit to figure out where it was starting from because it had been a while since I had read the previous book.   But I love how the author writes these books because you can imagine it so vividly that the characters seem to be roleplaying in my mind.  The book was quite long and due to working & being a Mom full time I did have to renew it a time or two just to get through it.  But I did like this book and how it came to an end.  It was a very well thought out series and the characters were awesome.  I highly recommend this book to a teenager or young adult looking for a different and adventurous reading series.  I give this book 5 stars.

Sex, Lies, and Online Dating (Writer Friends #1) by Rachel Gibson

 SEX...

What is it about men anyway? Bad cars, bad jobs, even bad teeth -- nothing convinces them that they can't snare a Size Two Babe with a D-cup chest. And after way too many internet dates with men named "luvstick" and "bigdaddy182," Lucy Rothschild should know.

LIES...

But sitting across from her now is "hardluvnman," and he seems different -- sensitive, honest, and hot! He says he's a plumber, while Lucy claims she's a nurse! She's really a mystery writer, dating online while researching her next book. Hey, everyone lies a little, don't they?

AND ONLINE DATING...

But Quinn's really an undercover cop hunting down a serial killer, and he sees Lucy as his top suspect. And while he could really go for this smart, sexy woman with the killer bod -- if that's the only thing "killer" about her -- he knows he needs to wine and dine her and discover the truth. Hey, he realizes the dating scene can be deadly -- but this is ridiculous!

The description of this book caught my attention. It has a bit of mystery to it and well as humor and love.   I had chatted with some guys from online and met up with 3 of them.  I guy was a total weirdo, 1 guy was nice but then kind of ghosted me and the last guy was nice and we dated for several months before he broke up to me and broke my heart.   So I could relate to some of the guys that were described in this book.

I liked the mystery side of this book and how it all came to play out.  So if you like mystery and  steamy romance then this book is for you.  I give this book 4 stars

Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts (Steampunk Proper Romance #4) by Nancy Campbell Allen

Emmeline O’Shea is determined to save the world—single-handedly, if necessary. A strong voice for societal reform, she is the natural choice to deliver a key speech at the end of the International Shifter Rights Organization’s week-long Summit in Scotland.

But when a death threat arrives at Emme’s home, she is immediately placed into protective custody, watched over by none other than her personal nemesis, Detective-Inspector Oliver Reed. The two have crossed paths many times, with disastrous results, but now they will have to work together in order to reach the Summit before midnight of the last day in order to ensure legislation is passed to protect the Shifter community.

As unseen enemies close in around Emme and Oliver, they struggle to reach Edinburgh by any means necessary, only to find Emme’s vindictive stepsister, Oliver’s vampire brother, and a dangerous political minefield awaiting them in Scotland.

Even more difficult is their own refusal to admit that the fiery animosity that once burned between them might be turning into the heat of romantic passion. Could a straitlaced policeman determined to uphold the law and an outspoken activist willing to break the rules ever find true love? Or will all their dreams shatter like glass when the clock strikes midnight?

This book is the 4th book in the series and is loosely based on the fairy-tale of Cinderella.   I find this book intriguing that they are set in the steampunk era and also include shape shifters and vampires, robots and more.   The characters in the books are thought out and the females are empowering.  It is fairly fast paced and goes hand in hand with the other books in the series.

Majesty (American Royals #2) by Katharine McGee

Is America ready for its first queen?

Power is intoxicating. Like first love, it can leave you breathless. Princess Beatrice was born with it. Princess Samantha was born with less. Some, like Nina Gonzalez, are pulled into it. And a few will claw their way in. Ahem, we're looking at you Daphne Deighton.

As America adjusts to the idea of a queen on the throne, Beatrice grapples with everything she lost when she gained the ultimate crown. Samantha is busy living up to her "party princess" persona...and maybe adding a party prince by her side. Nina is trying to avoid the palace--and Prince Jefferson--at all costs. And a dangerous secret threatens to undo all of Daphne's carefully laid "marry Prince Jefferson" plans.

A new reign has begun....

This book left off from where the first one ended.  The king had just died and Beatrice is now the queen.  Life changes for the Washington family for all the children.  It did remind me a bit like Princess Diaries 2 in some aspects of it and I kind of felt like the decision at the end was a bit predicable. But it would be a good teen read.  Give this book 4 stars.
